What is
Drama Therapy?
"Drama Therapy is the systematic and intentional use of drama and theatre
processes to further emotional, psychological and spiritual growth and
integration." Renee Emunah, Acting for Real.
Many individuals have found that the verbal medium of communication and
expression has been inadequate for their needs. Some individuals have difficulty
expressing themselves in words, and find that the symbolic forms of expression
allow more rapid or more complete access to their feelings. Others are so adept
in the verbal world that they easily protect themselves with words. Many people
find that working through bodily movement, gesture, sound and imagery allows
them to connect to more meaningful issues. Others may find that they prefer a
therapy process that allows growth and self-expansion in an environment of
creativity and spontaneity. For all these people, drama therapy may offer
potentially fruitful avenues of personal exploration.
